How to Find an EMDR Therapist in Florida: A Guide to Trauma Recovery

Writer: Amity OlsonAmity Olson

As an EMDR therapist in Florida, I am regularly asked how to find a therapist who is a good fit. There are SO MANY options available through the beauty of online therapy, making the whole state available to you if you are in Florida. This makes therapy convenient, and private, and eliminates the commute! Which is HUGE if you are in any of the metro areas (I’m looking at you, Jacksonville)! This can be overwhelming for anyone, let alone those just starting their therapy journey.

Whether you're a therapy veteran or a novice, I’m here to help. This guide will help you navigate directories, filter options, and choose the best fit for your healing journey.

Why Finding the Right EMDR Therapist Matters

Therapy, in general, is a very vulnerable experience. You are looking for a person you feel comfortable sharing things you most likely don’t share with anyone else, or very few people. It is so important you get picky about who you choose to go on this journey with.

Top Resources to Find an EMDR Therapist in Florida

  • EMDRIA Directory: The EMDR International Association is a great resource for finding providers in your location. You can filter by gender, online or in-person therapy, expertise, skill level, and payment type. Every provider listed has met the required level of training and supervision, so you can be assured they have the necessary skills—including yours truly.

  • Psychology Today: This database allows for detailed filtering to help narrow down the right fit. However, it’s easy to get lost in the weeds, making it difficult to determine the best match for your needs.

  • Consult List: If you prefer therapists reaching out to you, this is a great option. Fill out a request for what you’re looking for, and providers will contact you if they believe they’re a good fit.

Taking the Next Step: Booking a Consultation

EMDR is a highly effective therapeutic tool, but success depends on the right therapist. I always encourage potential clients to meet with a few different therapists before committing. Most therapists, including myself, offer free consultations for this reason. The strongest predictor of success in therapy is the quality of the relationship you have with your therapist. If you don’t feel safe or comfortable, it’s okay to find someone else!
